Car Licences Held Before 1 January 1997

You retain your existing entitlement to tow trailers until your licence expires. You may currently drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8.25 tonnes MAM. You are also permitted to drive a minibus + trailer over 750kg MAM.

Car Licences Obtained After 1 January 1997

If you passed your test on or after the above date, you will be required to pass an additional driving test in order to gain entitlement to category B+E and all larger vehicles. There is no category B+E theory test it is a practical test only

The Trailer Towing Law states that you must have a category B (car) driving licence before towing any size of trailer or caravan.

Car and Trailer Driver Training Courses

The B+E test consists of the following requirements:

  • The ability to carry out safety checks on your vehicle and trailer
  • The reversing exercise
  • The braking exercise
  • The drive
  • Uncoupling and recoupling

About the Reverse Manoeuvre

About the Reverse ManoeuvreThis exercise is usually carried out at the start of the test. Remember to use all round observation throughout the exercise. Keep all wheels within the boundary line throughout the exercise. If you get out of the vehicle stop the engine.

The Manoeuvre

  1. Drive forward in a straight line and stop with the exrteme front of your car level with, and in between, the cones A & A1
  2. Reverse so that you pass cone B on the offside of your vehicle.
  3. Stop in the bay so that the extreme rear of your trailer is within the yellow / black painted box area.

From Monday 26 March 2012 the size of the manoeuvring area for the ‘S’ shaped reverse exercise is being reduced in size.

The new manoeuvring area measures 66m x 11m, compared to the previous 92m x 18m.

Trials have shown that the smaller area:

  • requires the same level of skill and judgement
  • does not make the test harder
  • maintains the integrity of the test
  • This only affects the ‘S’ shaped reverse exercise; other parts of the test are unchanged.
